WHAT I DO AT WORK

The City of San José has more than one million residents and is the 10th largest city in the nation. The city is divided into 10 council districts. I am the Chief spokesperson on all matters related to the Council District 7 office which is represented by Councilmember Tam Nguyen. I am responsible for directing and overseeing the day-to-day operations; provide research and analysis on a wide range of issues affecting the City; & work with elected officials, the public, and the press on creating effective policies that will provide a good quality of life for all who live in the City of San Jose. Some policies that I have worked on include raising the minimum wage, ban on plastic bags, regulation of cannabis dispensaries, and affordable housing. It can be challenging and thankless work but I continue to do it because it may help to change the lives of many.

BIOGRAPHY

I was 4 years old when my family fled Laos to the United States. We resettled in Selma, Alabama where blacks and whites lived separately and the KKK marched in parades. I didn’t know it then, but our life in the South greatly influenced the work I do today.

We eventually moved to Appleton, Wisconsin where my father went to work for a paper company and my mom kept herself busy with 10 kids and farming. I spent all my summers picking cucumbers, weeds and worms. This was not the life I wanted. I worked hard to graduate from high school and went far away to college. I had a brief career in television broadcast journalism working for WTVD and WNCN in Raleigh, CNN-International in Atlanta and Twin Cities Public Television in St. Paul before delving into politics.

For the past 18 years, I ran political campaigns and served on various administrations. I currently serve as the Chief of Staff for the office of Councilmember Tam Nguyen. Prior to that, I was the Chief of Staff to former Vice Mayor Madison Nguyen and Minnesota State Senator Mee Moua.
